My thoughts after the break.
Two songs from the album have been released so far.
This one:
And this one:
Now I need to be up front about my relationship with this band. I started getting into metal shortly after Crack the Skye was released (Do the math). That album really means a lot to me, and is one of my favorite albums ever.
To be fair, these are both good songs. Black Tongue is actually a great song. But I don't feel like either of these have the depth or complexity I would expect/am expecting from the follow-up to Crack the Skye. They're fairly simple and stripped down compared to the dense and towering ten minute tracks I've grown used to. Now, once again, the two singles released from Crack the Skye (Oblivion and Divinations) were by far the simplest tracks on that album, and barely hinted at the incredible proggy masterpiece within, but I'm still becoming slightly anxious about this upcoming album. Mastodon are my favorite band, and I'm sure I'll enjoy this album, but I'm beginning to suspect that The Hunter will be unable to live up to the majestic megalith that is Crack the Skye.
